Task 1 and 2 for Tom..

These Images are based on the daily routines of people in America many years ago.  They are not really dealing with any issues they just show what people usually did in America in these times. All of these images are black and white and are mainly all portrait as they are all trying to fit either full sized people in the image or a lot of people in the image. The images were made between 1898 and 1995 and the very early images were taken with an ‘Eastman Kodak Folding’ film camera. Most of these images were in the ‘Life’ magazine which most of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s work was placed. I think the only theme of these images is the daily life of Americans in the 18th and 19th century.

Lee Friedlander:

Lee Friedlander’s images are documentary photos shot around the southern states. Instead of just taking these shots regularly ‘Lee’ decided to make the images ‘Black and white’ and take them differently. For example he took some of the images out of car windows/mirrors and took shots of shadows, which outline the object of the image. Most of his images are taken in portrait but he took a few images in landscape. The images that were taken out of car windows/mirrors were shot in 2010 as part of his ‘America by car’ work, which was mainly just taking pictures in America out of a car to show a documentary of what he did and where he went. The rest of the images were shot from the 1960’s when he started taking all his shots around the US. The car images were formatted in a published book ‘America by car’ while the one of the shadow on the back of her was used in a portfolio named ’15 photographs by Lee Friedlander’. I think the images have a common theme because they are all shot in the USA and show different aspects of the USA.
